CalJOBS Jobsite

www.CalJOBS.ca.gov

by Mark McAlister

Is CalJOBS the Rodney Dangerfield of on-line job sites? We don't give it no respect.

Even though salaries for jobs at this site range from "n/a" (not anough?) to nearly $100,000, CalJOBS is a resource largely ignored by Marin Professionals.

WWW.CalJOBS.ca.gov is the state employment department's website of job listings throughout the state. Private, public, and non-profit enterprises post openings on the site. These are sorted by county and occupation.

The wide variety of professional listings includes occupations in such categories as Social, Religious, Recreational, Management, Law, Health, Financial, Engineering, Education, Computer, and more. This writer is looking for a position as an actuary and found five postings in two months of irregular checking.

Three MP members are looking for work in the accounting field; 10 accounting positions were posted in Marin April 20th . Three members are looking for sales and related occupations; 95 such positions were posted in San Francisco.

The listings are very fluid, and opportunities appear and disappear throughout the day. One of us wishes to be an editor -- three editor positions were posted on the 19th; one on the 20th; and two on the 22nd.

The site is a reasonably fast one, although not as easily navigable as it could be. Graphics are kept to a minimum and the pages are easy to read. On the other hand, like most web sites out there, it is not 100% secure.

Some MP members are hesitant to peruse CalJOBS for fear that any information they send could be used by another person. Social security numbers, which are required to view the job listings are secure, however.

MP coordinator Keary Kensinger explains, "EDD already has our social security numbers. The EDD has an obligation to maintain the privacy of social security numbers and has a long history of doing so. The number is encrypted and sent across a secure connection. There has not been a problem with unauthorized access."

The CalJOBS site allows one to easily build a resume into the system. It is kept on file and made available to registered employers and recruiters. These resumes are referenced regularly. Note the resume is not transmitted across a secure link.

To enroll in CalJOBS, see Robert in the front room -- he is a wonderful resource. Or log on from home at www.CalJOBS.ca.gov.

Happy Hunting!
